US President Donald Trump travels to Paris on Wednesday to meet with French colleague Emmanuel Macron and the two leaders will try to understand Syria and the fight against terrorism and at the same time avoid The thorny themes that divide them.

Trump and Macron - both political novices who have won surprising victories in their presidential elections - have taken very different positions in areas such as climate change and trade.

US and French officials have said that Trump's visit will allow leaders to focus on areas where their interests overlap, including resolving the Syrian conflict and combating global terrorism.

Macron invited Trump to come to France to commemorate the Bastille Day festivities on July 14 and the 100 years since North American troops entered World War I.

"For France it is a unique opportunity to display French military power ... and this is very important for Trump," said Alexandra de Hoop Scheffer, director of the Paris branch of the Marshall German Research Center.

Trump has repeatedly criticized North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) European allies for failing to contribute their share of military spending.

While France has failed to meet NATO's goal of spending 2 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) on the military, Trump is pleased that the country is very close to doing so, a White House official said. Tuesday.

Trump will arrive in Paris early Thursday morning. He will participate in a welcome ceremony at the Place des Invalides, where he will visit a French war museum and the tomb of Napoleon. Then he and Macron will hold a bilateral meeting followed by a press conference, the White House said.

Accompanied by their wives, the two presidents plan to dine at the Eiffel Tower restaurant on Thursday night.

Trump's short trip to France follows his participation at the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, last week. The US was relatively isolated during the meeting, in which they reaffirmed Trump's decision to withdraw the country from the Paris climate agreement of 2015 to combat climate change.

In tough negotiations in Germany, Macron tried to soften the American language about climate policy.
