Woman was depressed after her father died in Mexico. A daughter survived but is hospitalized

A Latin American woman was charged with stabbing and murdering four of her children and her husband in a suburb north of Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday, according to local authorities.

Isabel Martinez faces five counts of murder, six of felony counts and another for attempted murder of another child, Gwinnett County police said.

According to the official report, one of the five children, a girl named Diana Romero, survived the attack but is still in critical condition and is believed to remain in the hospital for the next two weeks.

Authorities said that his father was Martín Romero, 33, and that the four children killed were: Axel, 2; Dillan, 4; Dakota, of 7; And Isabel, 10 years old.

"The suspicion we have in custody is the mother / wife of the victims," said Michele Pihera, a spokeswoman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.

The brutal attack happened at the family home in Loganville. The mother would have stayed in the house next to the corpses for at least 24 hours before notifying police shortly before 5:00 local time on Thursday, according to neighbors' statements, to the local broadcaster WSB-TV ".

The brother of the children's father said that he had talked to Martín the day before and that he did not notice anything abnormal.

The family had moved from Illinois to Georgia about a month ago and, according to neighbors, the mother was depressed because of her father's recent death.

According to some accounts, Isabel was not well for not having been able to travel to Mexico where the funeral of its father occurred.

The macabre crime left the community dismayed, despite little time of coexistence with the family.

"We've all been in shock," said Jim Hollandsworth, who runs a school-based care program, told the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper in the last few weeks.
