A New York City police officer was shot dead earlier this Wednesday in the Bronx neighborhood by a gunman who was then shot dead by police while fleeing the scene, officials said.

Police officer Miosotis Familia, who was 48 years old and 12 years old, was shot while sitting with her partner in a police car at about 12:30 p.m., the New York Police Department said.

The suspect fired at the window of the vehicle and hit Miosotis in the head, the force said in a statement.

"It is clear that this was a direct and unprovoked attack on police officers tasked with keeping the people of this city safe," said police commissioner James O'Neill.

Miosotis was taken to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where her death was later announced, police said.

Police officers chased the assailant on foot for a block, and when he pulled a revolver they shot him and killed him, the corporation said.

A passerby was also shot and found stable in a hospital, according to the department.

A total of 24 US law enforcement officers were killed by firearms this year, a 20 percent increase over the same period in 2016.

Miosotis is the eighth New York cop shot dead in the last five years. Two of his colleagues were ambushed by a murderer in December 2014.
