A Texas teenager died after holding a plugged-in phone while taking a shower, prompting her family to publicize the incident to prevent further electrocution deaths.
Madison Coe, a 14-year-old Lubbock resident, died during the weekend at her father's home in New Mexico, the Hobbs News-Sun reported, citing emergency officials.
Police in Lovington, New Mexico reported that the victim appeared to have been electrocuted and found a cell phone, charger cord and extension cord in the bathroom.
Madison's grandmother said in an interview with Lubbock's KCBD TV that she had a burn mark on her hand holding the phone. "This kind of tragedy does not have to happen to anyone else," Donna O'Guinn, the girl's grandmother, told KCBD.
"We want something good to come out of this as awareness of not using your cell phone in the bathroom while it's plugged in and charged," added Grandma. "She was just sweet to everyone and everyone loved her."
Her mother, Angela O'Guinn Downs, posted a message on her Facebook page showing pictures of her daughter next to the message: "Please, please let her voice be heard and protect and educate your children about fatal dangers of electrocution".
